Suspension systems have come as far in their development as vehicles themselves. The ever-increasing speeds achieved by today’s vehicles have forced producers to apply modern solutions when designing these systems, which, as a result, has also changed driving as such. The suspension elements operate in harsh environments and are exposed to the harmful influence of many external factors, like for instance water, salt or sand. And working in such extremely adverse environment can lead to many failures.
Generally speaking, suspension can be divided into two types: soft and hard. The soft one includes all kinds of bushings and rubbers. The hard suspension on the other hand means shock absorbers, wishbones and springs.
The suspension system is strictly connected with the steering system, which, as vehicles have been progressing in their development, evolved as well. The first and most important change is the operation of the power steering. In most of today’s cars, the power steering is provided by an electric motor and not, as it was in older designs, by a hydraulic pump. This makes today’s steering systems much more complicated than the systems applied in older constructions.
