Hydraulics

All components in a vehicle that contain incompressible fluid or oil can be categorised as hydraulics. When motorisation was still very much in its infancy, mechanical braking systems with no brake fluid were applied. The construction of the early brake systems was based on levers and linkages.

When the brake fluid was introduced, the brake system became a hydraulic system. Hydraulic elements can also be found in the design of the suspension system, especially in the rear shock absorbers with their ability to keep the ground clearance of the car constant.
