High-performance drive units have a different heat balance than the older, less-performance designs. The high temperatures emitted during operation of modern engines must be effectively controlled.

Now, diesel engines more and more often include electric water pumps that still work even after switching off the engine. The design of the thermostat as such has evolved too. Moreover, nowadays, it is increasingly common to find two thermostats in one housing. The coolant itself, which is the heat transfer medium, is not without significance either.
